Hiding 03:38
If you search you’ll never find it If you give up you’ll be blindsided If you search you’ll never find it If you give up you’ll be blindsided Looking up at the cloudy silence You resist the urge to fight it To keep from going insane To keep from throwing it all away Don’t let them find out that you’re trying You’ll wake the beast if you let the light in Don’t try and hide one, they always find it, and what you got, they’ll take it away, they’ll take it away, they’ll take it away Setting off the dreaded siren People come running like to put the fire out Took one to ruin it, how we were hiding We’ll have to wait a long, long time again I’d rather just go insane Why don’t we just throw this all away

Act Natural 05:03
On the first day After coming back home you brought your treasure to the morning’s light But the sun’s rays Sometimes reveal a little more than you expect to find You knew it was OK That everything would come to pass, would fall in line You’ll have something they’ll take You’ll make enough to buy some peace and joy and love and time Every Sunday An unlucky superhero’s tied to a post and stripped naked But it’s hard to relate To someone strong enough to stand up there & just take it You got too much at stake You’re selling door to door what they won’t make the same mistake with They send you far, far away You’re seeing visions of a coming devastation You see fire, you see ashes And you’re having a hard time You see fire, you see ashes And volcanoes and endless night You see fire, you see ashes You see fire, you see ashes On the fourth day You rolled that stone away and went out to find some old friends But it was one too late For anyone to call it victory over your darkness They’d already learned how to say No thanks, I’m really OK, I found my own way to solve it But now it’s less of a pain You’re allowed to lie when they all ask you about your gouged wrists And you try to act natural When they ask you why Yeah you try to act casual In the midst of that lie Yeah you try to act natural When they ask you why And you try to act casual In the midst of that lie

Already Knew 03:12
In the dark when you think you hear your name They should know that this is an awful way Say, “let’s talk in the daytime, we’ll work something out Cause I’m tired and I don’t care what this is about” The next night when they call on you the same Just ignore it and it’ll drive them insane Don’t get signed on to spew some uppercase truth They’ll take all the credit when you say what you already knew You’re in a new room trying to escape But they always follow us to our new place Yeah, they know this is usually the time that we falter But you’ve read the fine print on all that they offer You never said what they wanted you to say It wasn’t “speak up” or “pack me up, send me away” But once it was day you went down to the water It looked like infinity and you knew not to bother
4.
I think it might be real people I think it might be real people in my dreams ‘Cause I could never make this up ‘Cause I could never make this up, these things I’ve seen And I bet they know me better Yeah they probably know me better, my reveries Than the ones who think they do Than the ones who think they do and tell me It’s an awkward goodbye When I start to wake up It’s just one of those times When I don’t know if I’ll see you again They were in there tapping toes They were in there tapping toes to the beat ‘Til you tried to read the room And play something they could dance to, but then they leave So you pulled out your sad number And you played your sad number passionately I don’t think they cared too much I don’t think they cared too much about your worries At the end of the night When you start to pack up It’s just one of those times When you don’t know if anyone was really listening Do you remember what they always said?
Do you remember what they always said about your gift of tongues You’re manic, spewing God’s own word And somebody hears you like they’re the only one It’s how we’re gonna get out of this place It’s how we’re gonna break free of this prison I think that maybe I have I think that maybe I have your interpretation
5.
You gotta wonder what are they hiding Beamed from the city out here Measurements from silver balloons A smug, prideful veneer When we turned on the television at my old house Floating bodiless heads would appear Powdered up through red green and blue Don’t let those spirits in here Those silver balloons All that red green and blue Those silver balloons All that red green and blue The words come out incendiary from my twisted mouth But I try to be honest and fair If your radio’s in tune I think you’ll hear what I’m saying pretty clear Down by the riverbend, just a little bit south This one spot’s been blocked off for years The county government’s lying to you We’ve got wonderful mysteries to fear They’re lying to you Is your radio in tune? They’re lying to you Is your radio in tune?

Wise 04:01
Well I’ll be damned It’s ‘cause I tried to understand I got halfway up to that branch Maybe I still can Somehow be damned They’ll put bamboo into my hands They’re gonna bury me in sand At God’s command And falling trees in the woods-wise I’m hoping to be surprised To play back the tapes and hear an angel choir But little seeds on the path-wise Why can’t they just have more time?
Why can’t they just We’ll all be damned This time by sea, it’s not by land We saw the arsonist’s hand We knew we had no chance It’s all part of the plan This time they’re cutting me in half To see who cries and who laughs It was too hard to ask And falling trees in the woods-wise I’m hoping to be surprised To play back the tapes and hear an angel choir But little seeds on the path-wise Why can’t we just have more time?
Why can’t we just have more time? And burning trees in the woods-wise I hope that you’re not surprised To come back again and find it’s only briars Yeah, sowing seeds among thorns-wise Some grow into just that kind Some grow into just that kind
7.
Oh my spotted elephant, who told you to take a shower in gasoline You’re naked, gray, and wrinkled like the ones they’ve seen I thought that I could fake it ’til they all believed Fake it ’til they all believed Oh my tangled insides, how’d you know to pull tight so I could hardly breathe This feels just like it did when I was on my knees And still trying to get a cold heart to believe Get a cold heart to believe Movie screen actor, take the glasses off this underconfident nerd Reveal the glowing prom queen was inside her That’s all is took to get ‘em all to realize Get ‘em all to realize Little screens hunched, let’s laugh off anybody trying to be true & kind Thank God these algorithms say we should be fine If we don’t even look each other in the eyes Look each other in the eyes Look each other in the eyes Look each other in the eyes Is it OK to keep dancing when I’m feeling phony Just lucky to have the music and my feet below me Is it OK to feel happy and still a little bit lonely Just lucky to keep the bad things from killing me slowly Every new normal will come and go But the old surprises grow back the same But that’s just the game, that’s just game And all your searching will lead you home So you find the tracks that lead far away But that train goes teetering off the rails
8.
I’m tomatoes to ketchup, you’re grapes into wine And after all this I’m not sure I get better with time I’m abstractions to words, you’re the joke between the lines And I could’ve used another word to get you across fine Just like an oyster to pearl you never really speak your mind But it’s no matter at the market, no matter on the dive You’re bent down with your ear against the rails & ties You hear nothing’s coming but you don’t cross to the other side Feeling like an out of tune piano in a room hard to find They just play you to make it sound like they don’t really mind There’s your access to pasture, you see a ray of light But you too scared to leave, so you stay in here for life And you hold on to hope you get better with time Yeah, you hold on to hope you get better with time

Faults 02:50
Tectonic yesterdays are shaking up tomorrows And I don’t know if we’ll still be here I don’t know if we’ll still be here Maybe we’ll fly away while everything back home home’s laid low And watch all that catastrophe And watch all that catastrophe ‘Cause my faults are on display and something’s bound to happen soon You’re asking me to just believe You’re asking me to just believe We’re not so far away Just different sides of one ravine But don’t look down from the bridge between Don’t look down from the bridge between If you feel it start to shake, no matter at what magnitude Just hold on to some piece of me Just hold on to some piece of me You never know how long to wait You never know what you’re gonna lose And sometimes doubt the whole damn thing You sometimes doubt the whole damn thing Bookshelves and picture frames are falling down across the room But we’ll have retrofitted carefully Yeah, we’ll have retrofitted carefully It’s hard to know quite what to say, it’s hard to know quite what to do You’ve given me a song to sing You’ve given me a song to sing I never know quite what to say, I never know quite what to do You’ve given me a song to sing You’ve given me a song to sing
10.
We’ve already got four We’re half-way there Just another horn Sticking out of our hair Always wanting more Why do you still care What you bargained for Maybe if you were a millionaire You’d still see the pegasus horse Flying through the air There’s no power, no force That could put you up there Deep down at your core You know this isn’t fair You take notes, you keep score But you’ll always be scared

about

Sometimes the truth is right under our noses, but it's just too scary to reckon with, too liberating to conceptualize, or too trite to catch our attention. How do we know when to give up our ideologies and gut feelings and elaborate frameworks and follow the drab evidence to something less mystifying? And when should we dig into those capacities in protest of empiricism's captivity?

Written over a couple years from chance combos of transient joke words passing through my mind, recorded in a makeshift studio over the span of a few months, this album became my way of asking those questions. During all that time the songs have been living as coddled, half-formed characters restless to be realized by the community of some other mind's transformation.
